Maker Rim Brake Version 3

The Maker:  A high performance customised carbon wheelset guaranteed for life

Wheelworks has been building custom wheelsets for over a 15 years and in that time we’ve learned a lot about what makes a great wheelset.  The Maker is the culmination of seeing what works and what doesn’t.

This is the third iteration of the Maker wheelset.  It’s wider and lighter than the Version 2, and comes in a new range of depths to better suit modern bikes and uses.

Our wheel-building process has been honed over many thousands of wheels.  We’ve studied the minutia of each and every step in the process to minimise error and inconsistency and maximise wheelset performance and durability.  Our processes are so specialised that we’ve had to develop the tooling, machinery, and software to build and maintain the quality of each and every wheelset.

The Maker series has translated the strengths of carbon fibre from racing into more everyday use. The result ticks many of the same boxes, better performance and weight over alloy wheels without having to compromise on the durability and utility of the wheels.

The wheels were extremely comfortable, well suited to any terrain, even the crumbling roads that serve as my most demanding routes” – Matt Wickstrom  CYCLINGTIPS

Tyre Pressure Suggestions

Tubeless-ready and Optimised for modern tyres

The Maker’s 19mm hooked bead allows you to install any tyre from 23mm to 40mm.  It is tubeless-ready to work with the latest generation of tubeless-road tyres and has been painstakingly designed to be as easy as possible to install these often tight-fitting tyres.  Matched to the tubeless design is a hooked bead which allows the use of non-tubeless tyres and to provide uncompromised safety.

FYI: A Continental GP5000TL 28mm tubeless tyre (our staff favourite) measures 28mm on these rims. Run these at 75psi front / 80psi rear for a simply amazing ride with great comfort and incredible cornering grip.

These wheelset uses a tubeless-ready hooked bead allowing the use of both traditional road tyres with inner tubes fitted, or tubeless-ready tyres so regardless of what tyres you want to use we’ve got you covered.

Tubeless rimtape is fitted and a pair of light weight CNC aluminium tubeless valves is supplied.

Our attention to detail extends to the tubeless valves: serrated lockrings makes them easy to fit or remove and integrated wrench-flats are provided for removing super-tight valves.  The valve cores are removable for easy cleaning or for assistance while installing difficult tubeless tyres.  The inner section of the valve is optimised for our rims ensuring an easy air-tight fit.

Maker Weights

Easy tyre install

It’s no secret that tyres have become harder to install onto wheels over the past few years. This is primarily due to tubeless tyres: rim manufactures have made their rims larger to reduce blow-offs and tyre companies have made their tyres smaller for the same reason. The result is small tyres on big rims and often leads to sore thumbs and money in the swear jar.

The Maker is different: We’ve got the lowest sidewall height of any rim we’ve tested and one of the deepest internal gutters and the result is that a pair of Continental GP5000 tubeless tyres (our staff fav) will go on either by hand or with minimal force. You’re welcome.

Hub choices

All Maker wheelsets can be customised to suit your riding style, conditions and weight. Hub options include offerings from Dial, DT Swiss 240 or 350, Chris King and White Industries.

Spoke Info

We use the DT Swiss Aerolite bladed spoke for all of our premium wheels.  The Aerolite has a round 2.0mm diameter head and thread, and is tapered and flattened to a 0.9×2.3mm bladed center section.

We take the excellent quality DT Swiss spokes and then apply some Wheelworks magic to them to further increase their durability.  Rather than rely on boxed spoke lengths in 2mm increments we cut each and every spoke to the exact length needed, down to 0.1mm, and then roll 10mm of beautiful new thread on our Japanese made Morizumi machine.  Exact spoke length means the spoke nipples are fully supported and eliminates nipple breakage, even when using light weight aluminium nipples.

Once our spokes are laced into your wheels they go through a rigours pre-stress procedure which eliminates any popping or pinging of the spokes and further increases their durability.

Because of our attention to detail we offer a lifetime guarantee against broken spokes on all our wheels.

Maker Brake Performance

Carbon rims have a reputation for terrible brake performance. but not so with the Maker: We worked with the industries best carbon fibre experts to ensure a brake surface and brakepad combination which develops as much or better brake power in both wet and dry conditions so you can worry about what rain jacket to wear, not whether your brakes will work.

The quality of braking was good, perhaps even close to excellent –CyclingTips

Lever ‘feel’ is different as the carbon pads have a softer initial contact with less initial bite than an aluminium rim, however raw power is the same.

The Maker’s brake track will last for a long, long time…we’ve got a few guys with 50,000kms on their Makers and the brake track is still in near perfect shape.  How?  Because the Maker-specific brakepads are designed to wear out rather than wearing the brake surface.  Maker brakepads will last around 10,000km and we supply free brakepads for the life of the wheelset

Free Brakepads

Optimum brake performance comes from the rim and brakepad being designed in unison.  The high Tg resins and special carbon fibres embedded in the Maker rim’s brake track are perfectly matched to the Maker brakepad to give excellent performance in both wet and dry conditions.

The Maker is a wheelset designed for real-life.  When you’ve worn out your Maker brakepads simply get in touch with us and we’ll send you some new ones free of charge.

Skewers & Brakepads

Each pair of Maker wheels includes Maker-specific carbon brakepads and quick release skewers.

Our road skewers are the result of four generations of iteration and improvement and bring attention to detail to an often overlooked wheel component.

An internal-cam closure means smooth, quiet operation with a clamping force which can’t be met with external-cam designs.  A steel shaft ensures ultimate stiffness and security and the sculpted lever is comfortable in the hand and sits flush when closed.

Maker Warranty

We have a lifetime guarantee on the Maker because we know it will last.  You’ll never break a spoke.  Unless you whack something really hard the wheel will never go out of true. The hub’s bearings and the rim’s brake track will wear with use (that’s normal and unavoidable) but until they’re worn-out nothing strange will happen to the wheelset.  And if something weird did happen we’re here and we’ll take care of it.  We promise.

There are two types of warranty: The one where a product is produced so cheaply that it’s expected to fail and be replaced, and the type where so much effort and attention to detail goes into it’s production that the chance of failure is tiny.  Our warranty the second type.  We use only the highest quality products and we put an exorbitant amount of effort into the wheelbuilding and quality-control processes and that allows us to stand behind what we build and sell.

This warranty does not mean your lifetime, but the wheelset’s. “How long should a wheelset last for?” is not easy to answer and subject to all sorts of variables. In short, a wheel set free from abuse and neglect will go the distance; we pride ourselves in the value you will get out of our products.

This warranty is for the original owner and does not cover damage caused by improper care, negligence, normal wear and tear, accident, improper usage, or the natural breakdown of colours and materials over extended time and use.

This warranty covers the hub from material defects, spokes and rim for the life of the wheel, and workmanship.
