Lifetime guaranteed eMtb wheelset ready for adventure

Ebikes put massive strain on wheels:  Their extra weight and power breaks spokes, destroys hubs, and cracks rims.  Luckily here at Wheelworks we are very good and building wheels which stand up to the abuse of Enduro racing so taking what we’ve learned from this aggressive style we’ve applied the lessons to the challenges of ebike wheels.

Our proprietary carbon rim is both offset and asymmetrical to allow for high, even spoke tension.  The tubeless ready 40mm wide rim profile supports for tyres from 2.4″ to 3.0″ without squaring-off the tyres profile and create extra rolling resistance.

The Flite Carbon Trail wheelset is impressively light for great accelerations and steep/lengthy climbs but strong enough for aggressive backcountry trails.    Our lifetime guarantee covers the rims, spokes and nipples ensuring trouble-free riding no matter where you explore, and includes damage from impacts.

A high performance, lifetime guaranteed ebike wheelset?  Only from Wheelworks.

Intended Use

This wheelset is designed to partner with 130 to 150mm Trail style eMtb frames for aggressive trail riding on mixed terrain, and includes a comprehensive lifetime warranty for this type of use which includes impact damage.

Lifetime Warranty

Carbon Rims – Lifetime warranty including impact damage:

We design and build our Flite carbon rims to last a very long time. Where is the fineprint? There isn’t any. As long as you’re using the wheelset for it’s intended use (no you can’t buy XC wheels and then race the National Downhill series on them like one customer did) we’re proud to offer a lifetime guarantee including impact damage.

We know from building hundreds of these wheelsets that the chance of something going wrong is extremely low but if it does we’re only a phonecall away.

Spokes – Lifetime warranty

The most common cause of broken spokes is poor wheelbuild quality. We go to painstaking lengths to accurately measure each and every rim and hub we build before calculating spoke lengths and cutting and rolling spokes to 0.1mm accuracy.

We use the top of the line DT Swiss Aerolite bladed spoke on all our Flite Wide Carbon wheels because it’s the best spoke for the job and to save weight we use premium aluminium nipples. These spokes and nipples are mega-bucks compared to the round-section spokes and brass nipples used on competing wheelsets but we use them because your wheels deserve the best.

Spokes Nipples – Lifetime warranty

We have a lifetime guarantee against broken spokes and spoke nipples and we wouldn’t offer this we weren’t 100% confident in aluminium nipples and our ability to build a wheel using them.

Aluminium nipples save weight (just under a gram each) but get a bad reputation for three reasons – they seize to the spoke, they break, and they round-out where the spoke key turns them (generally because of reason #1)

We mitigate the risks of using aluminium and we don’t see problems with them. First we de-burr the inside of the spoke holes of aluminium rims: This means there are no burrs from drilling and it also helps to countersink the rim slightly to match the profile of the nipple. We then use a special grease on the spoke thread and the contact between the nipple and rim. This grease lasts a very long time and means the nipples won’t corrode to the stainless steel spoke.

Generally aluminium nipples break because of two reasons: the wheel wasn’t well-built, or the spoke was too short. Again, to mitigate these problems we measure the ERD (effective rim diameter) and flange geometry of every wheel I build, including combinations we’ve done previously as the ERD will vary by 1mm or so. We have custom software which calculates the spoke length very accurately, even going so far as to take into account how much the spokes will stretch due to their tension which is different on either side of the wheel because of the offset flanges. We then cut each spoke and roll it’s threads on a Japanese made machine. Our spoke lengths are accurate to around 0.1mm meaning the spoke sits flush with the top of the nipple ensuring all threads are engaged on the nipple and not placing the nipple under tensile loading.

Hub Choices

Not just content offering to best hubs on the market, such at DT Swiss, Hope, White Industries and Chris King, we have engineered our own high-end hub set.

We didn’t simply buy a hub and put our stickers on it, we work with the manufacturer to incorporate our design goals to accomplish the Dial Pro 72.  For example the Dial Pro hubs are made for us by a Taiwanese company who engineer hubs for large companies that every rider would be able to name.  This company has the engineering skill and testing facilities to develop a freehub body system which is durable, creak-free, and have very fast engagement….something very difficult to do. We then license this freehub body system and design the other features of the hub around it:  Where the flanges are placed, the angle these flanges have, the spoke hole diameter, and the spoke hole chamfers.  Our needs are often opposite to what the industry wants:  for example we want a very small spoke hole diameter to support the spoke whereas the industry wants a very large hole to make lacing the spokes faster in a production environment (the reason why spokes break at the hub).

Our Dial 36 hub utilises the same design features that make the Dial Pro 72 so durable, but with fewer points of engagement.  No special tools are required to service the freehub body or swap between axle standards and hub bearings are normal sizes and easy to find. If you have any questions about servicing or maintaining the Dial hub our trained and experienced staff are available to help.

In addition to the Dial Pro 72 and Dial 36, the Apex range can also be assembled with:

DT Swiss 350
Proven star-ratchet durability available in Center Lock or 6-bolt brake mount and 36 or 54 points of engagement. Is the 350 the best value-for-money hub available?

DT Swiss 240
Swiss machining results in one of the lightest high performance hubsets on the market. The 240 is everything we love about the 350 but lighter.

Hope Pro4
The UK is renowned for its miserable weather, fish and chips, and good hubs. Hope hubs are well sealed to keep the rain out and their range of colours will brighten even a dreary Fort William morning.

Chris King
Portland Oregon is a hotbed of USA cycling development. King’s 72 engagement point hubs connect you directly with the trail.

Tubeless

Tubeless allows lower tyre pressure, more grip, and less punctures.  It’s a no-brainer.

Tubeless rimtape is fitted and a pair of light weight CNC aluminium tubeless valves is supplied.  Our attention to detail extends to the tubeless valves: serrated lockrings makes them easy to fit or remove and integrated wrench-flats are provided for super-tight valves.  The valve cores are removable for easy cleaning or for assistance while installing difficult tubeless tyres.  The inner section of the valve is optimised for our rims ensuring an easy air-tight fit.

After Sale Support

Our commitment to you doesn’t end once we’ve got your money:  If you have any questions maintaining or servicing your wheelset we’re here to help.  Just get in touch.

Each wheel we build is engraved with a unique number and we keep detailed records dating back over 10 years tracking not just who built your wheels but minute details like spoke length, pre-stress procedure, and even what type of grease was used between the spoke and nipple.
