cyclcross, gravel, and adventures.
Disc brakes are nothing new to us at Wheelworks: While the rest of the industry tries to catch up to this ‘latest trend’ our staff bikes have been using discs for years.
We’ve had a disc-specific version of the Maker in both 35mm, 50mm and mullet depths for road bikes since the inception of the Maker lineup and it’s proven itself over many miles of paved and gravel roads. We’re proud to add the Maker CX to the range. The CX is designed specifically for cyclocross, gravel roads, adventures, and wide tyres. At 30mm wide and 29mm deep the Maker CX takes 28mm road slicks all the way up to 2” monster-cross knobbie tyres. It’s hooked bead provides security at road pressures but it’s tubeless design and deep internal pockets ensure burp-free performance when using cyclocross tyres.
The “standard” Makers are more than capable for gravel roads and works best with typical road tyres up to 28mm wide. After 28mm the AR takes over. If your focus is racing around grassy fields for an hour or logging miles of gravel roads the CX is your wheelset of choice and despite being robust enough for back-country adventures the Maker CX rim is only 425 grams and they build into incredibly light 1450 gram wheelsets. The perfect wheelset for mid-week commutes and weekend mud.
We know the lines of road, CX and AR get very blurry so if you have any questions on which wheelset is best for your needs don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Every Maker wheelset is individually handbuilt which gives you the ability to fully personalise your wheelset – choose the rim depth, hubs, and decal colours.

We use the DT Swiss Aerolite bladed spoke for all of our premium wheels. The Aerolite has a round 2.0mm diameter head and thread, and is tapered and flattened to a 0.9×2.3mm bladed center section.
We take the excellent quality DT Swiss spokes and then apply some Wheelworks magic to them to further increase their durability. Rather than rely on boxed spoke lengths in 2mm increments we cut each and every spoke to the exact length needed, down to 0.1mm, and then roll 10mm of beautiful new thread on our Japanese made Morizumi machine. Exact spoke length means the spoke nipples are fully supported and eliminates nipple breakage, even when using light weight aluminium nipples.
Once our spokes are laced into your wheels they go through a rigours pre-stress procedure which eliminates any popping or pinging of the spokes and further increases their durability.
Because of our attention to detail we offer a lifetime guarantee against broken spokes on all our wheels.
We have a lifetime guarantee on the Maker because we know it will last. You’ll never break a spoke. Unless you whack something really hard the wheel will never go out of true. The hub’s bearings and the rim’s brake track will wear with use (that’s normal and unavoidable) but until they’re worn-out nothing strange will happen to the wheelset. And if something weird did happen we’re here and we’ll take care of it. We promise.
There are two types of warranty: The one where a product is produced so cheaply that it’s expected to fail and be replaced, and the type where so much effort and attention to detail goes into it’s production that the chance of failure is tiny. Our warranty the second type. We use only the highest quality products and we put an exorbitant amount of effort into the wheelbuilding and quality-control processes and that allows us to stand behind what we build and sell.
This warranty does not mean your lifetime, but the wheelset’s. “How long should a wheelset last for?” is not easy to answer and subject to all sorts of variables so we can’t give you a definitive answer but you’ll get your money’s worth.
This warranty is for the original owner and does not cover damage caused by improper care, negligence, normal wear and tear, accident, improper usage, or the natural breakdown of colors and materials over extended time and use.

Our commitment to you doesn’t end once we’ve got your money: If you have any questions maintaining or servicing your wheelset we’re here to help. Just get in touch.
Each wheel we build is engraved with a unique number and we keep detailed records dating back over 10 years tracking details like spoke length, pre-stress procedure, and even what type of grease was used between the spoke and nipple.
