The Version 3 AR: A high performance 35mm or 50mm customised carbon wheelset guaranteed for life and designed for the modern generation of disc brake equipped bikes which are capable both on- and off-road. The Version 3 SL utilities the same shape and performance but with a higher modulus carbon and lighter layup for industry leading light weight.
These are the most versatile wheels we build and are at home exploring the countryside around you – whether on tarmac or off the beaten path the AR and SL wheelsets remove the limits of traditional road wheelsets.
Overall stock availability of our rims and DIAL hubs is good and we have these in stock. Lead times for some components are affected by supply chain issues. Get in touch for the latest updates.
AR vs SL
The AR and SL share the same widths and depths. The SL uses a different type of carbon fibre and an optimised layup to reduce rim weight without giving up performance or our legendary durability. Which should you choose? It’s a simple cost-vs-weight tradeoff.
Disc brake specific
Disc brakes are nothing new to us at Wheelworks: While the rest of the industry tries to catch up to this ‘latest trend’ our staff bikes have been using discs for years.
The Version 3 AR and SL are the latest addition to the Maker family and sport a wide profile to match the current crop of disc-road frames with ample tyre clearance. By combining the advantages in stopping power from discs, with the wind cheating profile of the Maker rim, the Version 3 AR Carbon Disk is a true neoclassic of carbon wheels.
We use the DT Swiss Aerolite bladed spoke for all of our premium wheels.
The Aerolite has a round 2.0mm diameter head and thread, and is tapered and flattened to a 0.9×2.3mm bladed center section.
We take the excellent quality DT Swiss spokes and then apply some Wheelworks magic to them to further increase their durability. Rather than rely on boxed spoke lengths in 2mm increments we cut each and every spoke to the exact length needed, down to 0.1mm, and then roll 10mm of beautiful new thread on our Japanese made Morizumi machine. Exact spoke length means the spoke nipples are fully supported and eliminates nipple breakage, even when using light weight aluminium nipples.
Once our spokes are laced into your wheels they go through a rigours pre-stress procedure which eliminates any popping or pinging of the spokes and further increases their durability.
Because of our attention to detail we offer a lifetime guarantee against broken spokes on all our wheels.
We have a lifetime guarantee on the AR and SL because we know they will last. You’ll never break a spoke. Unless you whack something really hard the wheel will never go out of true. The hub’s bearings will wear with use (that’s normal and unavoidable) but until they’re worn-out nothing strange will happen to the wheelset. And if something weird did happen we’re here and we’ll take care of it. We promise.
There are two types of warranty: The one where a product is produced so cheaply that it’s expected to fail and be replaced, and the type where so much effort and attention to detail goes into it’s production that the chance of failure is tiny. Our warranty the second type. We use only the highest quality products and we put an exorbitant amount of effort into the wheelbuilding and quality-control processes and that allows us to stand behind what we build and sell.
This warranty does not mean your lifetime, but the wheelset’s. “How long should a wheelset last for?” is not easy to answer and subject to all sorts of variables. In short, a wheel set free from abuse and neglect will go the distance; we pride ourselves in the value you will get out of our products. We’ve see plenty of our wheels with over 100,000km on them and they’re still going strong.
This warranty is for the original owner and does not cover damage caused by improper care, negligence, normal wear and tear, accident, improper usage, or the natural breakdown of colours and materials over extended time and use. This warranty covers the hub from material defects, spokes and rim for the life of the wheel, and workmanship.

After Sales Support
Our commitment to you doesn’t end once we’ve got your money: If you have any questions maintaining or servicing your wheelset we’re here to help. Just get in touch.
Each wheel we build is engraved with a unique number and we keep detailed records dating back over 10 years tracking details like spoke length, pre-stress procedure, and even what type of grease was used between the spoke and nipple.
Tubeless-ready and Optimised for modern tyres
The Maker AR’s 22mm bead-width allows you to install any tyre from 25mm to 45mm. It is tubeless-ready to work with the latest generation of tubeless-road tyres and has been painstakingly designed to be as easy as possible to install these often tight-fitting tyres. Matched to the tubeless design is a hooked bead which allows the use of non-tubeless tyres and to provide uncompromised safety.
FYI: A Continental GP5000TL 28mm tubeless tyre (our staff favourite) measures 29mm on these rims. Run these at 75psi front / 80psi rear for a simply amazing ride with great comfort and incredible cornering grip.
These wheelset uses a tubeless-ready hooked bead allowing the use of both traditional road tyres with inner tubes fitted, or tubeless-ready tyres so regardless of what tyres you want to use we’ve got you covered.
Tubeless rimtape is fitted and a pair of light weight CNC aluminium tubeless valves is supplied.
Our attention to detail extends to the tubeless valves: serrated lockrings makes them easy to fit or remove and integrated wrench-flats are provided for removing super-tight valves. The valve cores are removable for easy cleaning or for assistance while installing difficult tubeless tyres. The inner section of the valve is optimised for our rims ensuring an easy air-tight fit.
Easy tyre install
It’s no secret that tyres have become harder to install onto wheels over the past few years. This is primarily due to tubeless tyres: rim manufactures have made their rims larger to reduce blow-offs and tyre companies have made their tyres smaller for the same reason. The result is small tyres on big rims and often leads to sore thumbs and money in the swear jar.
The AR and SL are different: We’ve got the lowest sidewall height of any rim we’ve tested and one of the deepest internal gutters and the result is that a pair of Continental GP5000 tubeless tyres (our staff fav) will go on either by hand or with minimal force. You’re welcome.
AR and SL Weights
The bike industry has a habit of being rather, umm, generous with published weights – the real weight and the published weight are often significantly different but we don’t roll like that. These are the actual production weights for the Version 3 AR and SL wheelsets. These are average weights and exclude the tubeless valves and tape we install. Weights will vary by +/- 3% due mainly to rim production variance.
All Wheelworks wheelsets are customised to suit your riding style, conditions and weight. Hub options include offerings from Dial, DT Swiss, Chris King and White Industries because these are hubs which we know have a proven record of durability.
Have another brand in mind? Get in touch; we’re always excited to tailor a wheelset just for you.
All hubs are available in modern 100x12mm and 142x12mm thru-axle and most can also be supplied for quick-release, 100x15mm, 110x12mm, or most other axle ‘standards’.
The Version 3 AR wheelset are ebike ready for the latest generation of e-road bikes like the Specialized Turbo Creo
The extra power and speed of an ebike is no problem for the incredible stability and durability of the AR.
Many eBikes use the 110x12mm front and 148x12mm rear axle ‘standards’ – we intentionally don’t list these in the Builder so as not to confuse people, however the Dial, the DT Swiss 350s and the DT Swiss 240 EXP are our suggested hubs for eBike use and are available with these axles with no change in price. Please order the “something else” axles and when we will call you after your order is placed we’ll get it sorted.
